In various situations, you may need to display the device info on the screens, such as the screen name, assigned contents etc. You can do it now using the device data mapping feature. It will help you with situations such as,
- You are managing a large network and need to display the screen name and other device info to better identify the device.
- You have many screens placed together in the same location.
- Your team is running deployment or troubleshooting, you would like to get the device info shown on the screen to facilitate it.
Device data mapping allows you to map the device level info on the designer. At high level, it consists of 3 steps.
- Create a designer asset that fit to your need.
- Enable the data source for device info and maintain the mapping.
- Assign the asset to your screen.
Let's jump in and get started:
1. Create a designer asset.
Depending on how you want to display the device info, you may need to adjust the designer asset canvas size and design. If you want to reuse it and apply it to all the screens, you may need to place the asset into a zone of splitscreen, the canvas size should fit to the splitscreen zone for better display result.
In this example, the device data will be placed in a zone of splitscreen app, the canvas size was set accordingly. And these are the information to be displayed on the screen, the text and placeholder text box are placed on the canvas.
2. Enable the data source for device info and maintain the mapping
First, select the placeholder text box for screen name, then choose "Make Data Mapping" in the DataSource tab.
Then, you will need to go to the "DataSource" tab, and click "Generate DataSource", then select "Device Data" to enable the device data mapping on the asset.
Click the "Presets" button, it will bring up a list of preset device attributes, select the "Screen Name" in this case, it will map the screen name to the text box.
After that, you will see that the mapping is populated for screen name.
Just repeat this process, to get all the needed attributes mapped.
3. Assign the asset to your screen
Once the mapping is complete, you can just assign the asset to the screen. When the asset is displaying on the screen either directly or in a zone of splitscreen, it will be able to pull the device info from the assigned device and show it up on the screen.
For the above example, it will display like below when it was assigned to the "Demo Laptop" screen.
Advanced: Custom attributes mapping.
In some cases, you may need to configure custom attributes on the device. For example, when you build integration with other systems and the device is identified differently from the other system.
In the above example, the asset Id is a custom attribute defined on the screen level. To display it on the screen, you will need to follow the syntax "device.attributes.yourCustomAttributes" in the mapping, it will automatically pull the custom attributes that was defined on the screen on the assigned device.
